Colin and I decided to spend a weekend walking in Wales a few years ago. We started to climb up Pen Y Fan - some 3000 feet, the highest peak in S Wales -and about 3 hours later got to the top and enjoyed the fine views. We walked down the other side to the valley below and I expected we would stroll back to the small town of Brecon for a well deserved beer. Colin had other ideas, however. He said ' let's go back the way we came'. This would involve a very steep, tiring climb and I was not keen on the idea but he insisted and I reluctantly and grumblingly agreed. We did eventually get back to base safe and sound.... and very thirsty. Tne beers and curry in the pub in Brecon were most welcome and even more highly deserved - I thought- after doing the ascent twice.
Reminiscing in later years we have often talked about this jaunt and shared a laugh over Colin 'making me climb that bloody hill twice!'
But it was a great day with a good friend.
